Schuykill River RFC and Philadelphia Women's RFC Both Compete in Club 7s Championships

After qualifying in the MAC 7s Tournament, the Schuykill River RFC and the Philadelphia Women's RFC traveled to Minneapolis, Minnesota to compete in the National Clubs 7s Tournament. The tournament took place at the National Sport Center on Saturday, August 12th and Sunday, August 13th. 

Schuylkill River RFC Sees Toughest Opponents of Entire Club 7s National Championships

In their 8th appearance in the Club 7s National Championships, the Schuylkill River RFC were placed in what can be debated as the toughest pool of the entire tournament. Their first pool match was against the Denver Barbarians, who were seeded 2nd in the entire tournament. The Barbarians bested the Schuykill River RFC in a 27 to 12 victory. Tries for Schuylkill River RFC were scored by Be Janssen in the 6th minute and Jordan Ghyzel in the 12th minute.

Their second match in pool play was against Belmont Shore, who were seeded #5 overall in the tournament. The match began with a yellow card against Belmont Shore in the 1st minute and Schuylkill River took full advantage. Cody Bukowski scored the first two tries for Schuykill River RFC in the 1st and 3rd minutes. Although Belmont Shore took the lead at the beginning of the second half, Schuylkill River had the last word. Brian Keown scored the last try of the match in the 9th minute to defeat Belmont Shore, 17 to 12.

Both the Denver Barbarians and Belmont Shore finished in the Top 4 of the entire tournament. The Rugby Utah Selects defeated Belmont Shore in the Cup Semi Finals, where they went on to defeat the Denver Barbarians in the Cup Finals.

Schuylkill River RFC's last match for pool play was against Charolette Rugby. After a scoreless first half, Schuylkill River RFC put the first points on the board to take a 14 to 0 lead. Unfortunately, Charlotte Rugby soundly defeated them by scoring three straight tries. Charlotte Rugby came out on top, 21 to 14. 

After finishing Pool Play with a record of 1-2, Schuylkill River was placed in the Bowl Bracket against Optimus Rugby. In their lowest scoring match of the entire tournament, Optimus Rugby finished on top with a score of 12 to 5. Jason DeNofa scored the lone try of the match in the 7th minute. After losing the match, Schuylkill River moved to the Shield Bracket to face the Beltway Elite.

Schuykill River RFC scored two tries in the first half in the match against the Beltway Elite. Patrick Doyle scored in the 2nd minute, followed by another try from Peter Mulville in the 6th minute. Despite being up 12 to 7 at halftime, Schuylkill River RFC fell to the Beltway Elite with a final score of 17 to 12. In their last match of the competition, the Schuylkill River RFC faced the Austin Huns for the Bronze Shield Match. They found their most success of the tournament in their last match, defeating the Austin Huns 40 to 12.

Philadelphia Women's RFC Faces Tough Competition Throughout Club 7s Championships

In their 6th appearance at the Club 7s National Championships, the Philadelphia Women's RFC faced some of the best competition in the entire tournament. Their first pool match was against the Chicago Lions where the Lions bested of Philadelphia Women's RFC, 36 to 7. Desiree Markovich scored the lone try for Philadelphia in the 8th minute.

Philadelphia Women's RFC moved on to to play against the Austin Valkyries. Philadelphia scored two tries from Stacia Thompson in the 4th minute and Taylor Wuerker in the 7th minute. At halftime Philadelphia was ahead 14 to 12, but Austin Valkyries did not let down. The Valkyries went on to win the match with a score of 33 to 14.

Their final match in pool play saw them face the New York Rugby Club, who was seeded 2nd overall in the tournament. Katie Cordone scored in the 2nd minute to put Philadelphia in the lead, 7 to 5. But the NYRC could not be stopped, they went on to scored several tries against Philadelphia, winning 32 to 7.

On the second day of competition, the Philadelphia Women's RFC were placed in the Bowl Bracket against the Glendale Merlins. The Glendale Merlins got the best of Philadelphia, winning 24 to 7. Katie Cardone scored the lone try in the 11th minute.

Philadelphia moved on to compete for the Shield. Facing Minneapolis in a back and forth match, Philadelphia lost by a single try against Minneapolis, 19 to 14. Katie Chockley scored a try in the 3rd minute and Desiree Markovich scored in the 8th minute for Philadelphia. In their last match of the competition, Philadelphia Women's RFC faced the Temple Ninjas in the Bronze Shield match, coming away with a 26 to 5 victory.
