Chris Vely Scrum for Six

At the annual Scrum For Six charity event, held May 10, the Brandywine Old Boys beat the South Jersey Old Guard 52 -26. Some Wilmington Old Boys helped fill out the South Jersey Old Guard side. It was a friendly match that saw some nice breaks, long tries (one very nice try by Wilmington Old Boy Chris Gagnier) and great sportsmanship by all who played. Brandywine Old Boy Matt Stauffer was the Mike Bartone Man of the Match.

For the last 12 years Brandywine Rugby Football Club has held an annual charity fundraiser to benefit ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) research and honor former player Michael Bartone. Michael Bartone lost his life in March 2002 during his battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease, affects 5600 new Americans every year. It is estimated that as many as 30,000 Americans have the disease at any given time. Twenty percent of patients die within three years of their diagnosis. The Michael Bartone Memorial and Brandywine RFC are dedicated to continuing his battle through contributions to the ALS Association for the purpose of researching a cure for this faceless killer.

As a part of that dedication, in 2003, the first Scrum for Six rugby event was held in Michael’s honor. Over the last 12 years the BRFC has raised over $148,000, with $107,500 donated to the ALSA, over $24,000 in Scholarship Funding and $17,000 to offset the Club for Tournament expenses.

Michael graduated from Downingtown High School in 1981. Throughout his school years he excelled at many sports. After his graduation from high school, he attended Thaddeus Stevens Technical School. His love of sports continued after his graduation. His association with the Brandywine Rugby Football Club held special meaning for him. As Brandywine RFC celebrates its own thirty year anniversary this year, that specialness is heightened.

The line-up was as follows:
