This year’s Tier 2 championship saw teams move from a rugby 10s format to rugby 7s, affirming the popularity of the Olympic version of the game. With the move of several teams to Tier 1, a one conference round-robin tournament format provided some exciting and competitive rugby for the 5 teams comprising this 7s series. Newcomers Lehigh Carbon Community College, although only appearing in one tournament, proved to be a competitive addition to this year’s tournament. Philadelphia University and Swarthmore College displayed consistent performances throughout with some great 7s performances, but ultimately struggled with depth due to several injuries that accrued over the season. This left Holy Family University and King’s College battling back and forth throughout the season for the championship. Hard fought and close battles proved that neither side was the superior this year. While Holy Family drew from its experience, athleticism, and simple crash and spread game plan, King’s used its depth, strong turnover play, and ball retention to create a competitive series. In the true spirit of the game, both teams were declared co-champions, with both teams looking to use their 7s experience to make their mark against the Tier 1 teams in the spring EPRU 7s series.
