EPRU Club Teams Join Forces to Bring Rugby to Youth

Schuylkill players and kids celebrate winning the Pelly Cup

On Friday, October 6, 2017 the Schuylkill River RFC teamed up with Philadelphia Women’s RFC to provide a rugby session for the kids of the Northeast Frankford Boys & Girls Club.

The Schuykill River RFC and Philadelphia Women's RFC are both members of EPRU.

Teams Come Together to Introduce Rugby to Youth

The rugby clinic was part of a joint effort of Schuykill River and Philadelphia Women's ongoing program to engage in youth development within the community and help grow the game of rugby among youth. This group of kids have spent the past year learning about the game, handling and passing the ball, and practicing line-outs and scrums.

Boys and Girls Club staff members Rafiq and Isaac generously donated their Saturdays to bring a bus load of kids to a rugby match the following day, where Schuylkill River took on Pittsburgh in a battle for the Pelly Cup.

The dozen kids that joined Schuylkill River wore their custom Boys and Girls Club Rugby t-shirts that were previously provided to them during the 2017 rugby camp.

2017 Summer Rugby Camp

This past summer, Schuylkill River club members expressed their excitement about being able to teach rugby to community youth.

Player James Brunson said, "It’s all about the kids. When you give some of your time and energy to put a smile on a kid’s face it’s extremely rewarding. Rugby is a game that I love so I’m looking forward to helping grow that same love for the game with these kids...”

Schuykill River RFC Board Member Ryan McHugh was also excited to give back to a program in which he was once involved. He said, "I grew up right around the corner from the Boys and Girls Club so I’m pumped to have an opportunity to give back to my community and help teach these kids the greatest sport on earth.”

Enjoying Saturday's Match

Thanks to a lot of hard work and dedication from the Boys and Girls Club staff, Schuykill River was able to arrange for a group of kids to come to their rugby match against Pittsburgh on Saturday, October 7. Everyone had a great time; the kids especially enjoyed watching their first rugby match.

After being provided a traditional Philly lunch of hoagies and soft pretzels, the kids were ready to cheer for both teams in a thrilling match that ended up being a 38-34 victory for Schuylkill River. After the match the Schuylkill players invited the kids to help them celebrate by taking some photos hoisting the Pelly Cup (pictured above).

The Boys and Girls Club had such a good time on Saturday that they have already made plans to come back out and watch Schuykill River play at their Friends and Family Day double header against Baltimore on October 28.
