Club Spotlight: South Jersey RFC

South Jersey Rugby Football Club

With 48 years under their belt, the South Jersey RFC is one of the three oldest teams in the EPRU. Their legacy and unrivaled dedication to the game earns the Devils this week's club spotlight.

South Jersey RFC History

In the fall of 1969, John DeCoste and Casey McKee set out to create a local rugby club that would forge a brotherhood based on discipline and hard work. Today, the team helps create a modern brand of rugby in which players of many levels can evolve.

With only 3 experienced players, 10 rookies and 2 spectators among their ranks, the South Jersey Devils valiantly engaged (but lost) their first match in 1969. Since then, the Jersey Devils have become a breeding ground for world class players. Dozens of their members have played for the Union Select Side, while other Devils have joined the ranks as Referees, American Eagles, Maccabiah Games Medalists, and ERU Territorial Representatives.

In addition to the fall and spring league seasons, South Jersey plays in competitive 7s tournaments along the eastern seaboard during the summer. The Club also supports A & B sides, Women's side, an Old Boys side, and Under-19 Boys and U19 Girls.

South Jersey RFC is a Division II member of the Eastern Pennsylvania Rugby Union.

The Olde Guard

South Jersey RFC alumni members have formed the Olde Guard, the premier rugby related charitable fundraising organization primarily focusing on youth sports and community oriented charitable causes.

The Olde Guard is an active philanthropic organization dedicated to developing facilities, promoting rugby in South Jersey and serving the community that supports the team. The Olde Guard hosts an annual golf outing with proceeds going to the Cerebral Palsy Center.

South Jersey alumni also are a significant contributor to the National Transplant Assistance Fund as well as a College Scholarship for the team's high school players.

International Rugby Tours

The Devils stateside tours have included tournaments from Kentucky and Louisiana to Virginia and Florida and numerous states in between. But the South Jersey RFC hasn't kept it in the continental United States, the team has occasionally organized social tours to various countries in Europe and the Caribbean. In the last few years, the team has traveled to England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, France, Canada, Jamaica and The Bahamas.

Throughout the years South Jersey has also hosted players from all over the world, including teams from Gravesend, London, Bristol, Bath, Stroud, Basingstoke and Newbury, England, Bargoed, Newport and New Tredegar, Wales and South Africa among them.

Join the NJ Rugby Community

The South Jersey Devils are based out of Cherry Hill, NJ, just a ten-minute drive from Philadelphia and 40 minutes to the Jersey Shore. Due to their central location, they welcome players from various townships that are interested in joining an exciting team where you can learn and/or refine your skills within a competitive, team-spirited organization.
