Nearing their 40th anniversary as a team, Reading Rugby has always been dedicated to sportsmanship and camaraderie among players and fans alike, earning them this week's club spotlight. 

Reading Rugby History

The Reading Rugby Football Club was established in 1978 as a local Pennsylvania team to compete in the Mid-Atlantic Conference (MAC) and the National Competitive Region 4 (NCR4).

Based out of Reading, PA, this men's sports team and social club that currently competes in the Eastern Pennsylvania Rugby Union at the Division III level. Reading Rugby also fields a competitive 7s side.

Decades of Titles under the Belt 

Throughout the club’s history Reading Rugby has seen successful at the league, regional, and national levels.

Reading Rugby has claimed the title of EPRU Division Champions in 2001, 2002, and 2003 while also placing 2nd in 2013 and 3rd in 2014.  

For years the men's club has been playing in the Mid-Atlantic Conference (MAC). They earned the title of Champions in 2001 and 2003, while later winning 2nd place in 2002 and 3rd place in 2013. For two consecutive years in 2008 and 2009, Reading Rugby made 4th place in the Mid Atlantic-North for Division II.

On the national level, Reading Rugby placed 5th in the USA Rugby National Playoffs in 2001 and then placed 7th two years later in 2003. In 2016, the team ranked 16th in the nation for men's Division III.

Reading Rugby Featured in Berks County News

69 News (WFMZ-TV), serving Eastern PA and Western NJ, featured Reading Rugby in an expose this past January. Jim Vasil hosted the segment, stating that "Reading Rugby [is] quietly one of Berks County's most-beloved traditions". 

In an interview, Team President Dean Andes said, "When we're on that field, we're brothers... Rugby is the most infectious sport I've ever played. I just fell in love with it. The camaraderie, the physicality of it, the athleticism, it's the thing that pulls people together really."

Rugby as a Way of Life

Although the club has seen successful in a variety of conferences and 7s tournaments, the true heart of the club has always resides in its players. Reading Rugby has never wavered on its commitment to sportsmanship, competition, and camaraderie.

In addition to the competitive on field environment of games and practice, Reading Rugby also provides a variety of off-field social gatherings that forge the strong social bond among its members. Always with an eye to the future, Reading Rugby welcome players and fans from anywhere in the region who would like to join and become part of something, not because it is easy but because it is hard.

As the team often says, “rugby isn’t a sport, it is a way of life”.
