Media Rugby is located in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, and consists of over 120 athletes over several divisional teams and over 300 alumni ruggers. Today, they receive the honors of being this week's EPRU Club Spolight.

History of Media Rugby

Media Rugby was founded in 1978 by three long time high school friends. Best friends Gary Cummings, Perry Hartranft, and Chip Alyankian all began playing rugby at their respective colleges. Then, after graduating and returning home, the three friends all knew that they wanted to continue to play rugby... and so the Media Rugby club was born.

The three friends began Media Rugby with heavy recruitment, inviting ruggers from the local high schools and colleges. Full of young aged players with high levels of energy, Media Rugby quickly earned the reputation for their hard-nosed play. In the 1980's, more recruiting tactics helped to grow the program.

After Marple Rugby RFC closed their doors and dissolved, Media Rugby was able to recruit all players who were looking for a new home.

Media Rugby is More Than Just a Rugby Club

When the first team came together, they consisted of a total of 9 sets of siblings on the team. The term "Brotherhood" meant more to the club than others and that still remains with the team today.

The team exists to promote the sport of rugby as a whole, teaching their players life morals through being a part of the club. The club has been known for their never ending involvement in the local community. They have done charity work for Red Cross, Toys for Tots, Elwyn Institute, Philabundance and more.

By showing leadership through example, Media Rugby was inducted into the Media Area Sports Hall of Fame in 2008.

Where Media Rugby is Today

Over the years, Media Rugby has flourished into a competitive Division 1 club in the EPRU. They have been on several tours in Europe over the years and have even been ranked in the Top 10 by USA Rugby.

Recently, Media Men's team moved to Division 2 while they begin a new recruitment strategies. Along with the Men's Team, Media Rugby has also established youth programs to get ruggers playing at a younger age.
