Club Spotlight: Lehigh Valley Rugby

Lehigh Valley RFC

To help celebrate their 30th anniversary as a club in 2018, the Lehigh Valley Rugby Football Club takes this week's club spotlight.

Lehigh Valley Rugby History

The Lehigh Valley Rugby Football Club was founded in 1998 after the Allentown 'Blues' (c. 1966) and Bethlehem 'Hooligans' (c. 1974) rugby teams merged to combat both clubs' dwindling numbers. Located the Lehigh Valley and surrounding areas, the LVRFC represents both men's and women's sides while also overseeing High School and Youth rugby teams. The men's team is a full member of the EPRU.

In 2004, an Allentown Youth and High School team was formed. The team won High School Championships in 2005 and 2006 before LVRFC agrees to take an oversight role for the team in 2008.

The men’s club fielded two strong sides in local and regional competition from 2008 to 2009. A new coach from New Zealand, Al Harris, teamed up with existing coaches Kip Desch and Reno Pesaresi to help bring the team get to the MARFU playoffs in 2009 and 2010. In 2009, the side beats a virtually unbeaten Virginia RFU side in Charlottesville.

In 2010, the men's club takes the name of 'Hooligans' while the High School team is named the 'Blue Hooligans'. Soon after the women's side is dubbed the 'Lady Hooligans'.

Every year the LVRFC hosts an annual Summer 7s in Monocacy Park in Bethlehem, PA.

D3 Mid-Atlantic Champions

The Lehigh Valley Hooligans traveled to Richmond, VA to compete for the Mid-Atlantic Division 3 Championship in Spring of 2017. The Hooligans won a closely contested match against James River by a score of 24-15.
