Club Spotlight: Jersey Shore RFC

Jersey Shore Rugby Football Club

The Jersey shore is more than just beaches and boardwalk, it is also home to a proud rugby community. The Jersey Shore RFC is a long standing member of the EPRU and this week's club spotlight.

Jersey Shore Club History

The Jersey Shore Rugby Football Club (JSRFC) was founded during the summer of 1986. Three members of the South Jersey RFC became tired of the long trips to Cherry Hill and beyond for practices and matches and were considering rugby retirement. After the spring season, and before retirement, these three friends and assorted other rugby enthusiasts began practicing and playing touch rugby at a school field in Ocean City.

Due to high public visibility of the practice field, a relatively decent sized rugby playing population, and others wanting to learn to play who were living in the area started, players suggested starting their own club at the shore. Through the weekly practices, which continued all summer, and word of mouth, the beginnings of the Jersey Shore RFC started to take shape.

Those players who practiced throughout the summer of 1986 embarked on the fall season playing together as South Jersey’s C and sometimes B-side. The first fall season was so successful that a full time Jersey Shore club playing home matches at the shore became inevitable and the decision was made to make to make the club official. That winter Jersey Shore Sharks went for all out recruitment and application to the Eastern Pennsylvania Rugby Football Union.

The JSRFC Today

The club has a come a long way since it was founded. The Sharks currently has four levels of team sports: Men’s Club for ages 18 and older, Old Boys for ages 35 and older, High School Boys Team for ages 15-18 years old, and Co-ed Youth Tag Rugby for ages 6-14 years old.

The JSRFC also hosts the annual Atlantic City Rugby Invitational, the only 15’s tournament at the shore. A dozen local rugby teams come out to play in 2 pool games and playoffs to win the crown and ultimate bragging rights. The Sharks have cultivated such a wonderful rugby community and social club that rugby enthusiasts, not just players, come out again and again to watch the tournament.
