Club Spotlight: Hibernian Men RFC

Hibernian Rugby Football Club

Playing rugby in Lower Bucks County, PA for over 40 years, the Hibernian Men RFC is this week's Club Spotlight.

Hibernian History

Active since 1976, the Hibernian Rugby Football Club was founded by former Blackthorn RFC players along with some enthusiastic novices to the game. Today the Hibernians are based in Lower Bucks County and play on a beautiful, regulation-size pitch and train under the lights at the Poplar Street Field in Parkland, Pennsylvania. The Club also has a scrum-machine at this location.

Since the very beginning, the Hibernians have concentrated developing a club with strong ties to all aspects of rugby. In the spring of 1995 the first ever Hibernian RFC Old Boys Side played a match against South Jersey Old Boys. The club now proudly supports a very good Boy's High School Side, and Girl’s High School side from 2003 until 2015. Looking for further expansion, the Hibernians plan to bring back their Annual Summer Sevens Tournament, which for many years was granted USA Rugby-East Qualifier status.

The Men’s Side has been, throughout its history, a second division team in the Eastern Pennsylvania Rugby Union. It won the EPRU Second Division in 1987 and 1991. And in 1992 the club was the wild-card team in the ERU 2nd Division Championship. The club will be moving to Division 3 in the fall season of 2014.

Well-Traveled and Well-Loved

The Hibernian RFC’s greatest achievement has been perpetuating the old rugby tradition of traveling often and extensively, thus fueling the international spirit which is Rugby’s trademark. Besides trips within the USA (Florida, Colorado, Savannah, and the northern reaches of New York), the team has visited numerous countries on several continents; the Bahamas, the Cayman Islands, England (twice), Wales (twice), Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Slovenia, New Zealand, Fiji, Bermuda and Ireland.

Beloved by their community, the Hibernians always have a crowd at their matches. Even the babies and children come decked out in Hibo Gear to cheer for their family and friends. The club also supports Boy's High School U19 Side, welcoming students and players from from all the major high schools in Lower Bucks County.

The Hibernians are dedicated to field a hard working rugby team that promotes sportsmanship and basic moral values. If you like to experience the Hibernian spirit, join the club as either a player or a social member.
