North Penn 7s Featured in The Reporter

North Penn RFC Men's Team

On June 17th, the North Penn RFC hosted their annual 7s tournament at Clemens Road Park in Hatfield, Pennsylvania and the local newspaper The Reporter was on site to recap the success of the tournament.

Playing Rugby is Like No Other Sport

Playing rugby means more than just the love of the game. It's about the sport's culture and the unbreakable bonds you make along the way.

Whitney Richard, a Senior from Penn State and also a graduate of North Penn, knows this all too well. "Any other sport, the teams aren't as close," he told The Reporter. "Your rugby team is your family. That’s why people stay with their programs for years and years and years because the people you play with are your family.”

Turnout Continues to Be Strong at North Penn 7s

Mike Sciarra, Vice President of the North Penn RFC, acknowledges the amazing amount of strong teams that sign up for the tournament year after year. “We have a pretty committed turnout so we get a lot of these guys year in and year out, fantastic turnout. We had 32 teams so it will be the third year running we’ve had this many teams. The big thing is all these teams are local.”

Sciarra also gave praise to Schuylkill River for always being a front runner and great competitor. "Schuylkill River has a great program, especially with sevens, so they’re always huge, huge contenders.”

Without the great turnout and support every year, the North Penn 7s would not be the steadfast and incredible competition it has become.

North Penn RFC Also Recognized for Excellent Program

The Reporter's own Kev Hunter made sure to recognize the various teams that fall under North Penn RFC; including a men's side, both boys' and girls' high school, and a youth flag rugby side to get them on the pitch as early as possible.

John Lock, President of North Penn RFC, is very happy where the program is headed and how this tournament has been run. “I’ve been running this program for five years now and seen it grow. It’s been huge."
