West Chester has earned its first Eastern Pennsylvania Rugby Union Championship, having defeated Temple 12-10 in the Men’s DII College final yesterday. St. Joe’s beat Millersville to nab EPRU’s third seed heading into MARFU playoffs.
“When you play Temple you are guaranteed a very physical match,” West Chester coach Steve Green said. “And today was no exception. I am very proud of our guys. They showed great character and poise under pressure.”
Temple logged an unconverted try in either half, while West Chester relied on flyhalf Scott Cramer’s boot for its points. Cramer slotted four penalties and kept Temple’s offense at bay with long clearing kicks. WCU got great defensive performances from its pack, and held off Temple’s forwards as they pummeled the try line for nearly 10 minutes in the second half.
West Chester and St. Joe’s advanced to MARFU playoffs year, neither of which advanced past the semifinals. Temple’s last appearance at MARFUs was in Spring 2004.
