Future Eagles Wanted

Last year's camp had over 70 individuals participate. From the 70 players who participated, 10 of the 12 players on the MARFU Men's 7's 2011 roster attended and were chosen from the camp. One player (Tim Acker Kutztown) was chosen to represent the All American Collegiate Team. One High School individual (Peter Ondi) was chosen to represent North East Men's Sevens Select Team.  Seventeen year old Akinola Raymond (PRU High School Select Side/ Maryland Exiles) and nineteen year old Matias Cima (University of Maryland/ Maryland Exiles) were the two youngest players to make the MARFU Men's 7's 2011 All-Star Team. Glenn Thommes an eighteen year old freshman from the University of Delaware Men's Rugby team also participated at the 2011 MARFU Men's 7s camp and is presently playing for the USA Under 20 Eagles team playing in the Junior World Cup.

Present USA Rugby head coach Alex Magleby stated that "the MARFU camp is a key way to help us identify players in the Mid-Atlantic region. Only a handful of teams from each region qualify for the national club 7s, so outside of the national championships this is the primary place to impress national team selectors and to play one's way onto the territory side, and hopefully a place in the national team. Along with increasing the knowledge and skill of the game of sevens throughout the region, we expect to see future Eagles at the camp."

About Sevens Rugby in the USA

Due to its international popularity, 7s rugby was voted into the Summer Olympic Games for 2016 and 2020. In 7s, seven-a-side teams compete in seven-minute halves and each team is allowed three substitutions. The 7s player must be both mentally and physically disciplined. Since 7s is played on the same-sized field as 15s, there is more room to run. This results in a fast-paced match that allows for high-scoring games. The 7s athlete must train and develop different skills than a 15s player and be able to make the right decisions under pressure.
