Josias A Sterling Memorial Apple Pie 7s

The Josias A. Sterling Memorial “Apple Pie 7s” Rugby Tournament, held annually on the Friday after Thanksgiving, is the primary fundraising vehicle of the Josias A. Sterling Memorial Fund. 20 to 30 high school and collegiate teams participate in this annual event in Philadelphia. The Fund’s purpose is to sponsor 100 at-risk youth annually in the Josias A. Sterling Aquatic Education Program at The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center of Philadelphia.

The Josias A. Sterling Memorial Fund was established to honor the memory of Josias Sterling, St. Joseph’s Prep ’08. Josias tragically lost his life off the coast of New Jersey in the summer of ’09, after completing his freshman year at Temple University. Josias was a standout player on the Prep Rugby 2008 State Championship Team, and was Temple Rugby “Rookie of the Year – 2009”.

Bill Gregory, Head Coach, University of Scranton Men's Rugby is encouraging all MARC sides, men and women, to consider sending a team. He said, "When I coached Josias 2005 thru 2008 at St.Joseph’s Prep before I moved on to coach at Scranton, I can tell you he was like a son to me. In fact he was staying at our family shore house the weekend he got caught in a riptide and drowned. The annual tournament and the ad sales for the tournament program book fund our $10,000 annual commitment which funds one hundred at-risk inner city youth to take a six week swim safety program."
