Dana Bateman: A Life of Rugby

It is with great sadness that the EPRU announces the passing of Dana Bateman. Dana passed away on Saturday after a courageous battle with cancer. She has been a fixture in the the EPRU for as long as most of us can remember.

She will be dearly missed.

Dana loved rugby. She loved USA Rugby. She loved the EPRU. Dana loved the Bethlehem Hooligans and Whitemarsh Rugby.

Dana served as a USA Rugby Director for many years and as the MARFU Director representing the EPRU from 1994 to 2001. Most importantly to all of us, Dana served as EPRU Secretary since the 1970s up until her death Saturday.

Dana started her rugby career, unlike so many, as an administrator, working tirelessly for the Bethlehem Hooligans, then the EPRU and ERU, MARFU and eventually USA Rugby. The Hooligans email chain is buzzing today in sadness over Dana's passing.

"As all the old Hooligans know, Dana probably did more work than any other non-playing member of the Hooligans for so many years of our existence --- 10 years, 20 years, worth!"
- Emil Signes

"She was so very supportive of rugby teams and rugby development for all teams on all levels for many many years. So sad to hear, may she rest in peace."
- Dan Benedict

Facebook is now adding similar kind comments.

"So sorry to hear this. Worked with her through the start up of a high school program and for six years as Treasurer of EPRU. There is no one better."
- Brad Allen, past EPRU Treasurer

"Lois and I first became acquainted with Dana (and Aileen) on the legendary MARS tour in 1977. She went to become the heart and soul of the EPRU. No job was too much and she made our union the the national standard for rugby organization and administration. And a really good person as well."
- John Dyduck, Long-time EPRU Director

"Oh wow :( What a huge void she will leave in the EPRU. I remember spending hours in Dana's office organizing rugby files in the late 90s trying to keep on top of all things EPRU and MARFU. She was such a kind and generous person."
- Dawn White, previous EPRU President

This is terribly sad news. I have known Dana for over 30 years. She wrote the book on managing local rugby. The Eastern Pennsylvania Rugby Union, the East, MARFU and USA Rugby benefited from her many efforts. Especially, her efforts to catalog the history of USA Rugby and the many contributors. Dana was always smiling and a joy to be around. She will be missed.

A search for Dana on the web simply listed her first as a long-standing administrator. A title I'm sure she'd be proud to answer to any day.

DOWN MEMORY LANE - UNION PRESIDENTS GATHER IN 1993
By Allyn Freeman | 01.04.17

Almost two-decades after the founding of USA Rugby organization, a first ever conference was arranged for the presidents of all the local Unions. Held in the Hacienda Hotel, Las Vegas, over two-days in January 1993, the event proved a great success with 39 administrators, representing 28 local unions attending.

The purposes of the conference were to share information, network, and confront similar problems and opportunities. It represented an exchange of ideas for rugby’s growth and development from a wealth of talent.

The meeting included long-standing administrators like Dana Batemen, Bill Haffner, Terry Flenner and others. Credit for the conference went to USARFU Director Gene Roberts, and Las Vegas host Craig Platt.

Please bear with us as we mourn and try to fill both the personal and professional void that her passing leaves.

If you are waiting on a response from Dana please forward it to my attention (Frank Lentz president@epru.org) and I will respond as quickly as possible.
