Club Spotlight: Wilmington Men's RFC

Wilmington RFC

The Wilmington Men's RFC has a very rich history dating all the way back to 1974 and has taken great strides to grow to where they are today.

Rich History from Wilmington Men's RFC

Before having their own club, rugby players from Wilmington chose to play for the University of Delaware RFC. However, in 1974 many players decided to form their own team, creating the oldest rugby club in the state of Delaware -- Wilmington Men's RFC.

The team finally gained their footing in the 1980 when they traveled to Florida for their first ever tour. Just two years later the program's first 7s team was formed and played as the "Killer Worms". In 1984, Wilmington RFC member Dan Frawley became the mayor of Wilmington and had to step down from playing for the team. This was a major influence on the club, inspiring them to start hosting an annual alumni game to give alumni players an opportunity to get back on the pitch. Also while in office, Dan Frawley declared that December 15th would officially become Wilmington Rugby Club Day.

Throughout the 1990s, the club began giving back to their community during Christmas time. The club partnered with the Greenhill Presbytian Church to deliver Christmas gifts to the needy.

Success quickly followed the team throughout the next decade. The Wilmington Men's RFC traveled overseas to Ireland in March of 1990. They marched with the Killaloe St. Patrick's Day Parade. In 1992 the team won the Division 2 Mid Atlantic Championship. Their 7s team also won their first ever tournament in program history in 1996, winning the Bethlehem 7s.

In more recent club history, the Wilmington Men's RFC won the Atlantic Cup Championship in 2013.

After a very successful 2015 season, Wilmington Men's RFC moved from Division 2 to Division 1 rugby team.
