Club Spotlight: Schuylkill River RFC

With a lot of recent success, we take a look at Schuylkill River RFC's awards and achievements from their inaugural season to where they are today.

History to Division I Status

The Schuylkill River RFC was founded in 1995 and are currently the only Division I program today that both trains and plays in Philadelphia.

In 1999, they earned their first EPRU Championship in Division III competition as well as reach the Elite 8 in Nationals. In their first year at the Division II competition, they were crowned as the EPRU Division II Champions and reached the Sweet 16 in Nationals. With their promotion to Division I in 2001, they were one of the only clubs to be promoted from Division III to Division I in a two-year span. The same year, they finished 2nd in their Division. In 2002, a one point loss would keep them out of Nationals. 

Today, the Schuylkill River RFC has a two teams; a Division I teams known as 'the Exiles' and a Division III team known as 'the Troops'.

Experienced Coaching Contributes to Success

The Exiles are coached by Owen Jones.

Jones began playing rugby in the 7th Grade for Haverford Rugby Club U19 Team in 1997. After high school graduation, he went on to attend Temple University where he continued his rugby career. During his college days, he had the honor to compete for the USA National U19 Team and travel with them to Durban, South Africa for the U19 World Championships in 2004. After college graduation, he played for Media RFC in 2008 and then join Schuylkill River RFC in 2012.

Jones' coaching career began where his playing career began, at Haverford Rugby Club U19. Then from 2009 to 2013, Jones was the head coach for Temple University's Womens RFC where he earned a large number of achievements, including 2009 EPRU Champions, 2010 MARFU Champions, 2010 D2 National Championship Runner-Up, 2010 EPRU Runner-Up, 2011 EPRU Runner-Up, 2012 MARFU Runner-Up, 2012 Elite 8 Finalist, and 2012 MARC Champions.

After being a player-coach in the 2016-2017 Season at Schuylkill River, he gave up his jersey to strictly coach the 2017 Season.

Tom Weishaupt acts as Jones' assistant coach. Weishaupt began is playing career in 2003 at Vassar College where he served as captain from 2005 to 2007. Weishaupt also led the team to two Metro-NY Conference Championships. He was named All-Star and Captain in 2006 in both the Metro-NY Conference and the Northeast Rugby Union. After Vassar, Weishaupt competed with the prestigious New York Athletic Club (NYAC) in 2007 and 2008, where he was a part of the NYAC 2008 National Championship Team. In 2009. Weishaupt joined the Schuylkill River RFC and played until 2014. During that time he was the forward's captain and won many awards, including the Players' Player of the Year and two Forwards MVP Awards.

Schuylkill River RFC to Host MAC 7s Championships
