Haverford Girls Emerge as Champions at 2002 EPRU HS Tournament
April 28, 2002 (Ambler, PA)
It was déjà vu "all over again" as the Haverford Girls earned a championship trophy at the East Penn Rugby Unions High School Championship Tournament.
Hosted by North Penn RFC, Inc, and sponsored by the U.S. Marine Corps, the annual event was staged at Temple Universitys Ambler campus. A steady rain for the first two hours of the event did not dampen the spirits of the participants, as nearly 500 male and female athletes on sixteen teams gathered for a long day of very good High School rugby.
In the Girls division, top-seeded and highly organized Haverford Girls made it two EPRU championships in a row with a lopsided 41-14 victory over North Penn in the final. Downingtown (third place) and Henderson (fourth) rounded out the championship bracket.
Sarah Sall, EPRU Girls HS Coordinator, presented the First Place trophy to Amber Benlian, Captain and inside center for the Haverford HS Girls. Haverford took first place at the EPRU Girls HS Championship held April 28, 2002. Amber represented the USA last fall as the youngest member (age 17) of the Under 23 Atlantis team in Trinidad/Tobago. She is headed to Penn State this fall.
Haverfords Teresa O'Brien (#9) and Christine Kneafsey (prop) took MVP honors in the Girls Division.
